Cori often writes inspiring stories for 2TheHeart dailies, but this, her first Funny Friday story, is my favorite. She's my hero, just for putting on the kneepads!
"The Day I Got Stuck"
by Cori Burner
As a mother of one son, I chose to spend the day with him, just doing some fun things together. We decided that our day together would be spent at the local Discovery Zone, or "DZ", as my son called it. We arrived at the fun place, complete with the assorted tubes and tunnels to crawl through. It wasn't too crowded, so I decided to join in on the fun, rather than sit on the sidelines and watch. Heaven forbid that I be known as a mom who never did anything with her child!
I donned the knee pads over top of my jeans legs and proceeded to chase my son through the tubes. I must have been a sight! A thirty something, heavy set woman chasing a little kid through a tube that certainly was meant for someone of a much smaller build.
Soon, other children joined in on the fun and would squeal with delight when I would approach them with the intention of catching them. They would scurry off through the tube, and I would be left
in some cubbyhole, trying to catch my breath. My knees were wearing out, but I certainly didn't think that my age would have any effect on my having a bit of fun with my son.
The children came around again, squealing with delight as I chased them through the tubes one more time. This time, a few of them, including my son, darted out a hole and climbed down a tangle mesh of ropes. I popped my head out of the hole and looked down. It didn't look that bad, I thought. It looked evenly spaced all the way down and I surely could squeeze through that. After all, I was not, in my mind, a thirty plus year old woman. Funny, how the mind plays such tricks on you!
I began my descent through the mesh of ropes, which I thought were solid. Much to my surprise, the ropes were made of elastic and gave way under my weight. Suddenly, one leg went down one side of the elastic rope, and one went down the other. I was stuck, and stuck good. By this point, I had neither the strength nor the muscle to extricate myself from this predicament.
I had visions of this making the local five o'clock news with the headline reading "Rescue squad has to cut woman out of ropes at local children's playland."
What seemed like an eternity, I finally managed to pull myself up and get my legs on the same side of the rope and climb down. I was exhausted! I laid down on the cushioned mat below and gazed up, in disbelief that I really had been so naive to think that I could
keep up with my son. A boy popped his head out above and shouted to the others, "You can come out now, I think she's dead!"
I had to laugh at myself for thinking that I was nimble enough to chase children through a maze of tubes meant only for them. Never again would I believe that my body would betray me the way it had this day. But my son will always remember the fun we had the day his mom got stuck! Why, he may even tell that story to his children. I'm sure they'll laugh too!
I live in the beautiful mountains of western Virginia with my husband and son. Though this experience happened a few years
back, I still laugh about it. I've written several things for 2theHeart. They include, "Angels in Camouflage", "Homecoming Sunday", and "Cabin in the Woods", as well as my upcoming story "The Little Shoeshine Boy".

The Letter Box:
Dear Sue,
I was at first horrified at your situation, but chuckled along with you as you described what "Hitting Bottom" was like. Susan is right - you have to admire someone who can laugh at herself! Great story!
~Michael
