"Silly String Mom" by Linda Ferris
It was a unusually warm Saturday afternoon, the day my Mom and I pulled into Riverside Hospital's parking lot. We were there to visit my nephew, Gary, and I was so thankful, that he wasn't in for anything serious. It didn't matter to Mom that it wasn't serious, my Mom would cry anyway. That's just the way she is. She has always had such a love and tenderness in her heart for her children and grandchildren, that she would cry in happy times and the sad.
"Little Gary's going to be just fine," I reassured Mom, as I parked the car and then went around to open the door for her. "I know," she whispered and wiped away a tear. "And oh, don't let me forget the card and silly string that I bought to cheer Gary up," I informed her, as I hid my face and retrieved my package from the back seat of the car. (I love her so, that whenever I see Mom cry, I get choked up too.) "Silly string! What's that?!" Mom asked with a tearful curiosity, as she looked for me to show her my treasure. I reached into the bag and pulled out the can of silly string. You know, the can where you push the button down and it squirts out liquid-looking-foam-like endless colored string?! "Watch this Mom" I smiled, as I aimed the little hole towards her chest, hoping that just a little would come out.
Mom was always such a good audience when it came to her kids showing off, as she waited in anticipation, looking down to see the results. When, for a moment..... nothing happened. "Hmmm, must be stuck," I said, as I pushed the button down a little harder, still trying to keep it aimed towards Mom. Then suddenly, there was this Bursting fizzy air-like sound. Not like it sounded in the past! And instead of a nice long flowing colored party string, there must have been a million TEENY TINY little pieces of silly string shooting out, all over Mom's hairdo, her glasses, her arms, and her chest.
I gasped, as time seemed to stand still and Mom looked down at her chest and arms. I just stood there for a moment, and then slowly tried to pick the pieces from her hair. "Oh my gosh," I exclaimed, "we'll never get all of these pieces out of your hair." (You have to understand, Mom has the kind of hairdo that was hairsprayed to last a week)
When finally, Mom slowly looked up at me through her speckled glasses and our eyes met. I think the shock on my face must have been as funny as the silly string was on hers, because she started laughing like I"ve never seen my Mom laugh before. Pretty soon, both of us were laughing so hard, that we almost had to hold each other up. So there we were, in the parking lot, crying and laughing all at the same time.
It took us a little while, but we were able to pick quite a bit of it off of her before visiting hours were over, and we hurried on into Gary's room. And when my nephew saw his Grandmother with silly string all over her, and heard of her first encounter with silly string, he had to hold his side as he laughed too.
Oh, it felt so good to see them laughing. God knowing all of our hurts and our needs, I believe even that defective can of silly string fulfilled His purpose that day. And He being the greatest physician of all, gave us just the medicine we needed - a good dose of laughter, a shot of silly string, and a heaping spoonful of love. A prescription sure to wipe the tears away.

"Christmas Shopping: Wouldn't it be wonderful to find one gift that you didn't have to dust, that had to be used right away, that was practical, fit everyone, was personal and would be remembered for a long time? I penciled in "Gift certificate for a flu shot."
"When your mother asks, "Do you want a piece of advice?" it's a mere formality. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway."
