Sometimes we have guardian angels protecting us and we don't even know it. And sometimes it's hard not to notice!

"The Angel Beside Me"
by Janet Lee Yates

I believe in Angels.  As a matter of fact I believe I have my very own Angel who watches over me each and every day.  Let me explain.  A couple of years ago on a beautiful fall day, my stepson's twin girls, Ashley and April and I decided to saddle up the horses and go on a picnic lunch.  We packed each saddle bag with the usual sandwiches, drinks, chips and a cell phone, just in case.  Ashley and April were six years old at the time so I always used plenty of caution with them around the horses, but that day it didn't matter.

We left the barn heading for a tall oak in the neighbor's pasture.  April and I were on a horse named Reno and I was leading Ashley on Tex.  We crossed the creek and started heading for what we call the Top Road when Reno stopped to take care of business.  I turned around to check on Ashley and realized that Tex was heading for the wrong side of us making the rope I held in my hand start to creep up under Reno's saddle blanket.  I wasn't really alarmed because I thought I could talk him through it at this point so when he started to buck I tightened the reins and started saying "easy boy".  That was the last thing I remember.  The next thing I know I'm standing at a gate, several hundred feet away, telling a woman I appreciate her helping us over and over again, but at the time I didn't really know what I was thanking her for.  Beside me were Ashley and April and the horses.  I could hear a four wheeler zooming up the road and I looked up and saw my husband with a funny look on his face.  Hmm, something's wrong here.  Beth, the twins mother drove up and asked me if wanted to sit down in her car. Ok, I guess so, I say.  When I sat
down I felt something on my face so I reached up to turn the visor down so I could look in the mirror.  Uh oh.  Something's wrong with this picture.  Didn't I use to have a few more teeth?

By the time I got to the ER I had begun to realize that I had had an accident. That's when I got worried about the girls, but my husband told me that they were ok.  I asked him to call them to let them know I was alright because I didn't want them to worry about me.  Now I know you're wondering, where the Angel was in all of this.  Well that was one busy Angel, I'm here to tell you.  First of all, she placed little April gently on the ground and kept her from getting hurt.  And old Tex has been known to outrun the four-wheeler, so I'm sure she had to fly like a maniac to keep her arms around Ashley as he ran to the gate.  And the Angel was by my side the whole time as well because I had four teeth knocked out by the roots and it didn't hurt a bit.  God must know I'm a sissy.  Later on I asked Ashley how she got off Tex and she told me that I looked at her and said "You need to get off that horse," then I got her down.  Which led me to believe that my friend the Angel might have even put a few words in my mouth.  Imagine that.  The girls like to remind me that I didn't know my name or my phone number that day and I still find it amazing that two six year olds kept their cool in a crisis.

God was surely watching over us that day.  Thank you, Lord.  And somewhere out there is one tired Angel  who shudders every time I go to the barn, THANK YOU!!

Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and I still ride Tex a few times a week. New rules: no riding double and no leading another horse while riding!  I love reading stories of inspiration and this is the result of looking around and finding a few of my own.  I also wrote "The Sheriff of Chilton County" featured on April 24, 2002.

The Letter Box:

Susan,
You might get tired of hearing from me, but I am writing again to thank you for your encouragement and the special way God used you in my having a place in "American Moments."

The most important thing of all is that on the eve of Father's Day, I was able to call my precious 80 year old father and tell him "you are going national, Dad!" He is such a card! He was so excited. And to hear his joy  and on such a wonderful occasion was almost more than I could stand!  Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Quietly jumping around,
Diane H. Pitts

GOOD JOB DIANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Karen,
Wow! Did your fun story ever bring back fond memories!  I remember one very special end-of-school picnic in one of the parks in Seattle when I was around eight years old. Fun and games, and lots of food. Afterwards, I had the same feelings you did, knowing the next day was "the first day of the rest of my summer". What a carefree feeling.

You're right "it doesn't get much better than that."

Since I was room mother nearly every year for one of my three daughters, I was able to join in the fun of their end-of-school picnics, preparing the food with the help of other moms. The excitement was contagious. I wouldn't have missed those picnics for anything. I love all of your stories...please keep them coming.
Bless You,
Pat Lowe

Dear Karen,
I really have grown to look forward to your stories! Your talent with words is wonderful! This one brought back a lot of happy memories and I want to thank you!
Love,
Karen (the other one)
