Chapped Lips
By Chuck Dishno

My dad was a cattle rancher and was born in 1884 in the Big Hole Valley of Montana. His Father was an early day homesteader in Montana and they knew many hard times as the weather then was much colder and harsher than now and they learned to make due with what was on hand.

Many years later my dad left the cattle ranch and went to Oregon with my mom where I was born. One thing pop always had on hand was a tin of salve called Pazo which he learned to use in the harsh weather for chapped lips. We all used it too.

By the time I was 16, pop had been a timber faller for several years and had followed his company to Dinuba, California. I would join him in the summers and we would work side by side cutting down trees. It was a great time in my life, being able to share in the work with this wonderful man. One Saturday we came out of the woods and went to Dinuba to stock up on supplies. He said he was about out of Pazo so he went into a drugstore. When he couldn't find any Pazo on the shelf, he asked the druggist if he carried it. The druggist said that he didn't carry that brand but had something else just as good for hemorrhoids. Pop, looked startled and said, "Hemorrhoids, is that what that stuff is for, heck, I've been using it for chapped lips for 50 years." The druggist just about fell over laughing and when he finally composed himself said, "Well, I guess what's good for one end is good for the other."

I asked pop where he had heard about Pazo and said that one of his ranch hands had told him about it years ago and had used it every since. It really works and you can still find it on some drugstore shelves. I guess it really does work on either end but I would suggest getting separate tins.

Earlier this summer, we were in the mountains for my other grandson's (Brandon) 10-year old all star baseball game.  The Jones family has a house up there and Ed, Darci, and family as well as Kevin and Brandon were staying there the first night of the tournament.  Ashley, (my 13-year old granddaughter, a friend of hers and me had gone up earlier.  The night of the game was a terrible night weatherwise.  Rain, lightning, and thunder.  Darci and Ed decided to take their 5 children and leave the game and go to the house.  Ashley's friend decided she would go with them.  When they arrived, Grady decided to take Erin on a tour of the house.

My mother-in-law was given the name "Grandma Great" by Ashley when she was able to talk so all the great grandchildren call her this.  The Jones house was originally my husband's grandmother's house and when she died, she had specified in her will the house was not to be sold but kept in the family for everyone to enjoy.  As Grady proceeded to take Erin through the house, he told her this was Grandmother Great Great's House and pointed to her picture and said, "She has now turned into a picture :-)

My Boss has three small children, two of them are twins, four years old. Generally she tells me of the funny things they say or do. One morning as she tells it, one of the twins told her; Mom, My dreams last night were in black and white, not in color because my eyes run out of film!

The Letter Box:

Re: "Prepared for What?"
What a wonderful story!  There are lessons to be learned here - lots of them.  There is always something to be thankful for - no injuries -the caring family, etc.  Though it is kind of funny, its a good story for the season in any event.  See you on Dec 1.

Susan,
What a wonderful surprise awaited me this morning. I unexpectedly received Funny Friday. A month ago I had unsubscribed because of the caous that comes with moving & then going on a 3 week vacation. I had no time to check my email so I unsubscribed to various lists, planning to resubscribe once I got settled. I hadn't had a chance to resubscribe but miraculously I received it this morning. It was wonderful. Maxine is a wonderful writer, she puts you right there alongside her. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. -Marianne
