The Rescuer, the Perfect Man

by Robert E. White

Not willing that any should perish

God formed a rescue plan.

Where the first man Adam fell and failed

The Father sent the perfect man.

In the form of a baby born

God incarnate, God with us,

Jesus the Christ, known as Jesus of Nazareth,

Quietly grew into manliness.

Little did those around him

Suspect a profound veracity.

That God in the flesh could be seen and touched

Yet have a confounding obscurity.

In men's company in Nazareth town

He lived and worked.

Knowing who He was, yet not afraid to wait

For His time would soon enough come.

Called to ministry at the age of thirty,

He knew change beckoned a new course.

Where wood and nails had had their place

He would lead men to God as source.

In the form of a dove, over the Jordan,

God recognised the Son.

The rescue plan, wrought in Heaven,

From humble roots had begun.

Going out among the people

Jesus began a special call.

To men of differing temper, talent and type

Twelve disciples in all.

Confounding many, with miracle and sermon

Jesus walked among the populace,

Teaching and healing, showing life freely

An attraction none could miss.

Is not this the carpenter's son?

They asked in much wondering.

As if such familiarity could answer

Any who, why and what questionings.

Like sheep which have gone astray

Men compare each other's stance,

Where some are more sinful, or weak, or poor -

The world desperately needed the perfect man.

More clearly than anyone could have said before,

The Christ spoke abundant life to all.

The rescuer who led and showed the Way

Became hated and brought to trial.

Seen by men as an object of derision

In utter abandonment,

In abject rejection and  cruelly taunted,

He bore the brunt of cursed government.

Christ at thirty-three, knew that

Change beckoned a new course.

Where wood and nails had place on a cross,

He would take sin's curse.

Who is this Jesus, the Christ who died?

Who gave himself for all?

Was it in vain He lived, ministered and died?

A cruel death, a rescue forlorn?

It was not in vain, as this was part

Of God's rescue plan.

On the third day

He arose victorious, The Perfect Man.

The Perfect Man, Jesus Christ

Came for one and for all.

He did not favour the easy way, or a lesser plan.

A man among men, to all a call.

The Perfect Man, and yet God

A mystery profound.

Jesus Christ sits at the Father's right hand

Arisen, almighty, whose glories abound.

So what say you, who read this text?

Is Christ just a good man

Somewhat better than the rest? What if

He is - the perfect man?

What then?

A perfect man

A rescuer

A bringer of Good News

For every man
